The former president appears to have held on to a hotly contested state that Democrats struggled to win.
According to projectionsDonald Trump has won the state of North Carolinawhich has earned him 16 votes from the Electoral College and has delivered a hard blow to Kamala Harris’ hopes to add a state to the Democratic column after Joe Biden’s victory in 2020.
Although it is also expected that the state has elected a new democratic governor, Trump’s campaign focused on him during the final weeks of the presidential race, and the effort appears to have paid off.
The candidate republican to governor, Mark Robinsonwas also greatly harmed by the revelations of racist and sexist comments that he had made on the Internet, including posts in which he described himself as a “black Nazi.” Trump’s campaign disengaged discreetly from him after the statements were made public.
North Carolina hasn’t voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Barack Obama won in 2008, despite several cycles of concerted efforts to win it back and several successes in down-ballot elections.
The counting of the votes continues, with special attention to the seven hinge states on which the result of the presidential elections will largely depend.
