“Trump’s election as the 47th president of the United States is a private matter for Americans, but Palestinians hope for an immediate cessation of aggression against our people, especially in Gaza“said Base Naim, a member of the Palestinian group’s political bureau, in a statement on Wednesday.
The organization stressed that the new president, whose term will begin after January 20, 2025, must listen to the voices that have been raised in the North American countrywho request an end to the conflict. “The American president-elect is required to listen to the voices that have been raised from within American society for more than a year about the Zionist aggression against the Gaza Strip, rejecting the occupation and genocide, and objecting to the support and bias towards the Zionist Entity”the group added in a separate statement.
In the text, Hamas described as negative the position of all US administrations since the Arab-Israeli war of 1948and indicated that the management of the current president, Joe Bidenhad “a biased path towards occupation and aggression”, in regards to military support, “which confirmed his role as a full partner in the slaughter of tens of thousands of our people, including children, women and the elderly.”
Trump’s last presidency (2017-2021) was marked by the United States’ recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to this city, which the Palestinians claim as the capital of a future State.
In that sense, Hamas said it hopes Palestine will be recognized as an “independent and sovereign” state, with Jerusalem as its capital, and warned that full support for Israel will only destabilize the region.
Trump, in 2018, suspended financial aid to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), decreased funding for development projects in the West Bank and Gaza and closed the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) office in Washington.
