Demi Moore is already known as an assertive actress, but at the French premiere of her new film The Substance (2024) she also had her say about the current state of America. The former partner of Bruce Willis left little doubt about her position in the (now settled) election battle between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
Suddenly canceled
Moore was not in the United States on election day, but in Paris. The first regular public screening was planned for Tuesday evening (Dutch time). The Substancethe explosive body horror film that turned heads at Cannes this spring. The actress plays a successful television personality who is dismissed from one day to the next. Then she stumbles upon a mysterious drug that can transform her into a younger self every seven days…
Paris and America
The Substance has been on display in the Netherlands for a few weeks; In France it took a little longer before the film could surprise a wider audience. Moore visited Paris par excellence to promote the award-winning title (best screenplay in Cannes, ed.), but she was clearly also concerned with the tense situation in the United States. Variety was on site and heard how the actress tried to link the state of America to the theme of the film:
Puritans, religious fanatics and criminals are in charge (in the US) (…) sexuality is always taboo, and there is a lot of fear in America around the body. I don’t understand why we celebrate sexuality in art but (often) not in films
Vote for Harris
It can be deduced from the quote that Moore probably did not vote for the future president, and the Disclosure star already confirmed this this weekend in a post on Instagram. “Excited to have cast my vote for #HarrisWalz,” she wrote. The actress made her statements in Paris a few hours before the first polls closed across the ocean.
