The National Water Commission (Conagua) has issued a weather alert due to the arrival of cold front number 7, which will generate wind gusts of up to 100 km/h in the northwest of the country and the probability of snow or sleet will increase in the mountains of Sonora and Chihuahua during the early hours of Monday, November 4.
According to the Conagua statement, the advance of this new cold front will cause isolated rains on the peninsula of Baja California and is expected to generate intense winds, between 80 and 100 km/h, with possible formation of whirlwinds in Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango. Likewise, in Baja California, Baja California Sur and Sinaloa winds are expected 60 and 80 km/haccompanied by dust devils.
In addition, a dry line in Coahuila, in combination with a low pressure trough in the northeast of the country and the subtropical jet stream, together with the entry of warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico, will cause showers in Coahuila and isolated rains in Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí, Conagua explained.
In western and central Mexico, in states such as Michoacán, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala, Puebla and Morelos, heavy rains are expected. For its part, in Jalisco, Colima, Guanajuato and Querétaro isolated rains are forecast accompanied by gusts of wind of 40 to 60 km/h and possible electric shock.
The agency also reported that the entry of humidity from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea will cause very heavy occasional rains in Oaxaca and Chiapasshowers in Veracruz and in the Yucatán Peninsula, in addition to isolated rains in Tabasco.
Finally, Conagua anticipated that, by Tuesday November 5cold front No. 7 It will extend over the north and northeast of the country, interacting with the subtropical jet stream. This will imply the continuation of low temperatures and strong gusts of wind in those regions.
This phenomenon will move over northwest Mexico and advance towards the north of the national territory, where it will be reinforced by a new mass of cold air. This interaction with a polar trough and the polar jet stream will contribute to a further decrease in winter temperatures and weather conditions in several areas of the country.
What is a jet stream?
Also known as “jet streams”, they are fast, narrow currents of air that flow in the Earth’s atmosphere at altitudes between 20 thousand and 50 thousand feet. They can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h and they form when there is a large temperature contrast between two air masses.
Jet streams influence the movement of storms and high- and low-pressure systems, as well as temperature and humidity in different regions. Their variation in intensity and direction can significantly impact the formation of precipitation and droughts, making them a key factor in understanding and predicting climate changes.
This cold front 7 will move over northwest Mexico and over the north of the national territory, which will be reinforced by a new mass of cold air, interacting with a polar trough and the polar jet stream, in addition to a dry line over the northeast of Mexico, causing heavy rains in Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, and isolated rains in areas of the northwest and north of the country.
