Let Hollywood nerds make a list of their favorite franchises, and there’s a good chance that Back to the Future will be on it. Robert Zemeckis came up with three parts of the crazy science fiction story between 1985 and 1990, and has since been regularly asked about a possible part 4. In a recent podcast conversation, the director is once again tight-lipped, but does hint at another possibility.
Back together
At 88 miles per hour, the everyday Marty McFly is sent back to the days of his parents in the celebrated modern classic. The boy discovers that the whims of inventor Doc Brown cannot simply go without consequences, and must do everything he can to reunite his parents in time…
‘Back to the Future: de musical’
Robert Zemeckis can now dream of the demand for a possible fourth part, and there is no scoop this time either from the Forrest Gump maker. Still, he held the door in a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confusedpodcast is ajar for another possibility. Zemeckis has to say ‘no’ to Universal “every six months” when it comes to a possible sequel, but another film form, such as a musical, might be on the cards:
A remake or fourth part, that’s just not on the agenda. But we can say that other things could work (…) I would love to do a ‘Back to the Future’ musical, like Mel Brooks did with ‘The Producers’… that would be great
Not standing still
According to Zemeckis, it is treacherous to want to return too much to the past, and that is the main reason why he would not simply join the production of a sequel. After the completion of Back to the Future Part III (1990) the director has not been idle: his latest feature film Here (2024) (starring Tom Hanks) hits theaters later this month.
