Its ascent via its east face is a world first and Langtang Lirung carried its pioneer. Slovak mountaineer Ondrej Huserka was killed after falling into a crevasse during the descent of Langtang Lirung, a 7,234 meter Nepalese summit, the Slovak climbing association announced this Sunday in a press release spotted in particular by Le Midi Libre.
The 34-year-old climber, member of the Slovak national mountaineering team, was preparing to make history, but the peaks of the Himalayas like to remind us that their exploration is often paid for in human life.
For the moment, the weather conditions do not allow the body of the young athlete to be recovered. “Today, the helicopter with a team of professionals and volunteers could not take off due to poor flying conditions,” the Slovak Mountaineering Association said in a statement this Sunday. The bad weather is expected to last a few days and Ondrej Huserka’s family will therefore have to wait before being able to find the mountaineer’s remains.
“Sliding into the depths of the glacier”
The drama unfolded on Friday, as Ondrej Huserka victoriously descended the summit of Langtang Lirung with his teammate Marek Holecek, a Czech mountaineer and documentary filmmaker. “He hit an inclined surface after falling eight meters, then continued to slide along a maze into the depths of the glacier,” Marek Holecek said on his Facebook page. I stayed with him for four hours until he passed away. »
“Ondrej had an accident while rappelling and fell into a crevasse. Marek Holecek is unable to pull him out of the crevasse, and Ondrej is in poor health after the fall,” the mountaineering association reported at the time. Back at base camp and warned by his teammate, the emergency services organized themselves to try to mount a rescue operation. The hoped-for miracle did not happen.
