Tom Holland and Austin Butler have committed to an energetic new film project. The Spider-Man star and the Elvis actor will play two speed devils in American Speed. Production is still in a very early phase, but Amazon MGM Studios has now stepped in.
Racing without shine
The film will be about Don and Bill Whittington, two racing brothers who became involved in a major controversy in the 1980s. The commotion that arose is known as the ‘IMSA scandal’. Several racers who participated in competitions such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans were suspected of criminal matters. Some of them were also prosecuted later.
Don admitted in 1986 that he and his brother Bill had deliberately evaded taxes, laundered money and attempted to smuggle marijuana into the United States from Colombia. He ultimately served an 18-month prison sentence. Bill’s sentence was much harsher: he was imprisoned for 15 years.
Early production phase
It is still unclear who will play Bill and who will play Don, but Butler and Holland have already committed themselves to the project. A director has yet to be found.
33-year-old Butler already drove a vehicle in the rough crime drama last year The Bikeriders (2023). Holland will first get to work next year and also received a call for Christopher Nolan’s new film.
