Winter time in Mexico: Where does it apply and when does it start?


The time change applies in several municipalities in five states in the north of the country. This year, the adjustment will be made one week later than usual, as it was previously made in the last week of October.

Time change has been practiced in Mexico since 1996, but since the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico has experienced a significant change in its management of timetables. Through the Time Zone Law, It was decided to eliminate summer and winter schedules, after concluding that the benefits of these changes were not relevant enough.

This measure sought to unify the schedule throughout the country, although exceptions have been established on the northern border, so In several cities, the time change is still necessary to facilitate commercial activities and financial operations at an international level.as well as to promote energy savings in certain areas.

When is the change made?

For two years, the municipalities in the border region of Mexico continue to adjust their clocks twice a year. The next change, corresponding to winter time, will take place on November 3, 2024 at 02:00 a.m..

Where does the time change apply?

This schedule adjustment only affects five states in the country, while the rest of Mexico will maintain the same schedule. According to the National Metrology Center (Cenam), several municipalities in five states bordering the United States will have to turn their clocks back one hour. These municipalities are:

Baja California: San Quintín, Tecate, Tijuana, Ensenada, Mexicali and Rosarito Beaches.

Chihuahua: Guadalupe, Janos, Juarez, Manuel Benavides, Ojinaga, Praxedis G. Warrior, Ascension and Coyame del Sotol.

Coahuila: Jiménez, Morelos, Nava, Ocampo, Piedras Negras, Villa Unión, Zaragoza, Acuña, Allende, Hidalgo and Guerrero.

Nuevo Leon: Anahuac.

Tamaulipas: Miguel Alemán, Mier, Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, Río Bravo, Valle Hermoso, Camargo, Guerrero, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz and Matamoros.
