Starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright Here (2024) – and with Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis at the helm – expectations are high for the new drama. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t seem to live up to those expectations. The first reviews came online today and don’t bode well.
‘Failed’
The new film currently scores only 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is remarkably low. Critics emphasize that the idea of one fixed camera point through which we as viewers travel through time does not quite work. According to them, this would have worked better as a museum installation than as a film. The film is also said to suffer from “questionable story choices”. Shame!
Robert Zemeckis’ Here fails to match the magic he created with Hanks and Wright Forrest Gumpbecause an interesting premise doesn’t come off well.
As Zemeckis Here had been built as a museum installation rather than a film, the permanent point of view probably would have made sense. But we came to be moved and for that to work, the camera would have to move.
While there are plenty of great moments, Zemeckis’ lack of restraint and some questionable story choices undo what should be a moving event.
