Frenchman Victor Wembanyama was instrumental in Spurs’ first success this season, after a failed start against Dallas. “Wemby” scored 29 points in 30 minutes to allow the San Antonio Spurs to win at home against the Houston Rockets (109-106). He was helped by the 17 points and 12 rebounds of strong winger Jeremy Sochan, as well as the nine assists of veteran point guard Chris Pau, who found him several times on childish picks and rolls.
The Frenchman won his physical duel against the Turkish pivot Alperen Sengun inside. He also stood out with a magnificent three-point shot made in the last second of the third quarter. Opposite, fullback Jalen Green also scored 29 points for the Rockets, but he missed a basket at the buzzer to try to equalize.
The Spurs, who had a 21-point lead at mid-match, were almost caught in the final moments. Gregg Popovich’s men will not experience the same relaxation when they once again meet the Rockets at home on Monday.
