The war has dragged the Palestinian territory of Gaza to the destruction of infrastructure and practically every activity capable of generating income, and it’s making him lose, until now, almost seventy years of developmentaccording to an evaluation by specialized United Nations agencies.
But Gaza is not the only one deeply affected by the military offensive that Israel has been maintaining for a year, since The West Bank has also set back at least 16 years.
As a whole, the occupied Palestinian territories have seen poverty increase to more than 74%, which has meant the emergence of 2.6 million “new poor”which are added to the 4.1 million that already existed, according to estimates by the UN Development Program.

The analysis indicates that Palestine’s GDP contracted by 35.1% in 2024, compared to the moment before the start of the war, and that Unemployment affects half of all Palestinians in both territories.
Regarding the way out of this deep crisis once the war ends, the UN points out that even if there is a regular and sufficient flow of humanitarian aid and funds for reconstruction in the coming years, returning to the situation before October 7, 2023 will take more than a decade.
However, it recognizes that the conditions of recovery could be even more restricted if, for example, Israel does not release the resources of the Palestinian Government (but which pass through its control), or if it imposes obstacles to the entry of construction materials and equipment, in which case Palestinian recovery will take much longer than a decade.
