The governor of the State of Chiapas, Rutilio Escandón, announced through his social networks the arrest of the alleged perpetrator of the murder of the priest Marcelo Pérez, happened this past Sunday.
“My recognition to the Justice Attorney authorities, who “I have been informed that the perpetrator of the death of Father Marcelo has been arrested,” the president wrote.
State authorities have not provided further details at this time.and the Prosecutor’s Office is expected to issue an official report with more information about the arrest and progress in the investigation.
What happened?
The priest Marcelo Pérez Pérez, of Tzotzil origin, born in the Chichelalhó community, from the municipality of San Andrés Larráinzar, was shot on Sunday morning by armed men who were riding a motorcycle, while he was traveling in the Cuxtitali neighborhood, to the east of the city.

The priest who was ordained in the seminary of the diocese of San Cristóbal de las Casas, on April 6, 2002, when Bishop Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel was in charge, was traveling in a white Nissan truck, without official protection, when he was attacked. He had left the 7 o’clock mass in the Cuxtitali parish when the armed attack occurred, authorities reported.
The first to arrive at the scene were citizens who approached the vehicle, which had several gunshots in the left windshield. TOSome people called 911, but the paramedics could do nothing.
