Previously, surprising rumors circulated in the semiconductor industry, where Qualcomm was said to be exploring the possibility of acquiring part of Intel’s chip business to increase the company’s product portfolio.
“The mobile chip maker has considered acquiring parts of Intel, which is struggling to make money and is looking to spin off business units and sell other assets,” said a source, quoted by Reuters, Friday (6/9/2024).
Intel’s chip design business is of particular interest to Qualcomm executives, but they are targeting all of the company’s design units. However, according to other sources, Intel’s server business seems to be of little interest to Qualcomm.
Qualcomm said it had not contacted Intel regarding the potential acquisition and declined to comment on the company’s plans.
“Intel is deeply committed to the PC business,” an Intel spokesperson said. Meanwhile Qualcomm refused to comment.
Qualcomm, which is valued at USD 184 billion (around Rp. 2,833 trillion), has been making plans to buy parts of Intel’s business for months.
“Qualcomm’s interest and plans have not been finalized and are subject to change,” the source said.
