An inmate died at Beaumettes prison in Marseille, his throat slit by his fellow inmate, reports BFMTV. The events took place during the night from Wednesday to Thursday with a weapon improvised from a shard of porcelain coming from a bowl, broken shortly before the attack, according to the 24-hour news channel.
According to another source close to the case, the attacker, aged 25, had been sentenced to six months in prison in a drug transport case and had been imprisoned in Baumettes since September. The deceased fellow inmate, aged 22, was in pre-trial detention, also since September, also for a drug case.
This death in prison occurs the day after the announcement by Didier Migaud, the Minister of Justice, of the organization of an inspection on the functioning of the Aix-Luynes penitentiary center. A decision taken in reaction to the latest series of murders which bloodied Marseille, notably involving teenage hitmen.
