Ifigenia Martínez was a Mexican economist and diplomat. He was born in Mexico City on June 16, 1930; He obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics from UNAM and she was the first Mexican woman to obtain a master’s degree in economics from Harvard University and at the same time she was the first to obtain a doctorate.
She was the first woman to direct the Faculty of Economics, during that time she defended the autonomy of the University and opposed the invasion of the army in Ciudad Universitaria; Because of that, she was imprisoned in a prison by orders of the then president Gustavo Díaz Ordaz.
In the 1980s he joined the democratic current of the PRI led by Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas and Porfirio Muñoz Ledo. who claimed the lack of democratic processes within the party.
In the 1988 election they renounced the tricolor and founded the National Democratic Front where she held a seat in the Senate, she and Muñoz Ledo being the first opposition senators.

In 1989, together with Cárdenas and Muñoz Ledo, they founded the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), In 2000 she was a pre-candidate for the head of government of the Federal District, but she ruled it out and expressed her support for Andrés Manuel López Obrador who was elected head of government in that election.
She was very close to Andrés Manuel López Obrador and supported him in the political issues he was involved in and thanks to this she earned the affection and respect of left-wing figures. She was also the founder of Morena where she held a seat in the Senate.
In 2021 he was awarded the Belisario Domínguez Medal for his academic work and his years of social justice.
In the 2024 elections she was appointed president of the Chamber of Deputies and in her last act presented the presidential sash to President Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman to hold the office.
