When talking about the pyramids in Mexico, we know the famous ones like Teotihuacán, Chichén Itzá Uxmal, Tajín or the Great Pyramid of Cholulahowever, An interesting discovery has been found in Campeche which is related to pyramids.
This discovery is related to the Mayan culture and provides very valuable information about one of the most important civilizations in our country. In the year 2023, A group of archaeologists belonging to the Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) announced the discovery of a lost city, which was called Ocomtún. And a year later, researchers announced a site in this same city.
With the help of LiDAR, which is a sensing technology that uses lasers to measure precise distances and movements in a real-time environment, Mayan buildings that had been lost for centuries were found.

The experts found a civic-ceremonial center and important pyramids, as well as a structure that was under a ball court. This study is a continuation of the project that was carried out in 2023 in the Balam Kú Biosphere Reservewhich is located in the center of Campeche and has approximately 140 square kilometers.
The deposits found are a main square with a pyramidal construction and a drainage canal, a 13-meter-high building that could have been a civic-ceremonial center and a ball court in the eastern part.
It was also discovered a site made up of several structures concentrated on a natural hill, as well as a 16-meter pyramid next to the main square, surrounded by offerings as flint points, pottery remains and a fragment of an animal leg which could have been from an armadillo or another large rodent.
It was found that there are low areas in which water flows intermittently and also present elevations with rocky terrain and thin layers of soil. Hence Researchers believe that there were not many inhabitants because the soil was not suitable for agriculture.
These settlements have few major buildings, there is no architectural decoration and there are almost no standing walls. Furthermore, the monuments are few, small and without engravings. Likewise, it is suggested that This city was occupied during the Late and Terminal Classic periods (600-1000 AD).
