The guild of carriers still considering the possibility of complying with a national strikeif they do not see concrete facts regarding their requests to stop the extortions that they have experienced daily for months. The measure, if taken, this time will affect not only Lima y Callaobut the different regions of the country, and other unions would also join.
This was confirmed by Edgar Vitor, secretary of the United Transport union, after specifying that last Wednesday, October 2, they already met with the Minister of the Interior, Juan José Santivañezand are awaiting results in the immediate term.
“We had an interview with interior minister and he explained to us what he was going to work on. That is why we have given you a deadline until Friday (October 4). Until that day, honestly, if we do not see results from all the requests that have been made to all instances, we are going to act,” the leader warned in RPP News.
According to Vitor, the transport union and others, such as the winemakers y motorcycle taxi driversare already organizing with a view to complying with a national strike, if the Executive and Legislature do not take their requests into account.
“A national strike is already being called, not just for transporters. It is at the level of the entire country, because the need for security is at the national level. For everyone, not just for me or our union,” he said.
Among the requests of the carriers, according to the spokesperson, is the implementation of the program Eyes and ears for public transportas they have called it, which consists of placing cameras inside the buses and at specific stops so that the National Police Monitor and intervene more quickly and effectively.
In addition, he highlighted that to date several innocent transporters have already been murdered in the capital, who were shot one or more times for refusing to give in to the threats of the organized crime.
“Indeed, we have dead. On the issue of public transportation, it has now gone beyond the issue of insecurity. It is more noticeable in our sector, because we transport between one thousand to two thousand people per trip every day. So, several users have also been affected by these attacks,” he noted.
He added: “There you see the inability of the State. It is not working at this point. We were just talking with the Minister of the Interior, but I see that he is more concerned about taking care of the police than to the citizens. It presents projects that say that we have to take care of the police no matter what. And who takes care of the citizens?
In the last hours, the possibility of a new strike in Lima and Callao being carried out this Thursday, October 4, emerged, but this was ruled out by Martin Valerianpresident of the National Carrier Integrity Association (Anita).
“There is no unemployment. It was unanimously agreed at the grassroots meeting that there will be no strike. First, the government will be required to repeal Law 32108, if not, we will just go to national strike,” said the leader.
As explained on the night of Monday, September 30, the bases agreed on giving the Executive and Legislative a deadline to repeal the Ley 32108 (Law against organized crime). If their demand is not met, they would just adopt a protest at the national level, which would not only include the sector public transport.
“Now, we are going to form the Transport Union Committee at the National Level, with all the organizations from different sectors, to join forces and go to a national strike in case we are not heard,” he said.
