Meta, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, has again been hit with a fine in Europe. This time the fine was 91 million Euros or the equivalent of IDR 1.5 trillion.
Quoting GizchinaMonday (30/9/2024), Meta fines were imposed on Meta due to poor handling of user data.
Meta was fined because they were accused of storing user passwords without proper security measures, aka without being protected by encryption.
Advertisement The Irish Data Protection Authority, which is tasked with supervising the personal data of users in Europe, imposed the fine on Meta after carrying out a series of inspections.
This fine was imposed after the company admitted to storing user passwords in plain text, aka without any security layer or code to protect them.
This problem was discovered during a security check in 2019. At that time Meta informed the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) about the problem.
Despite swift action, the investigation into the matter took several years. Now, about five years after the initial inspection, Meta has been fined and asked to pay a fine, because the company is considered to have seriously neglected user data.
