Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Four years after suing Google, Epic is now suing the technology company for the second time. The Fortnite game developer has filed a second antitrust lawsuit against Google and, for the first time, is also suing Samsung.
Quoting The VergeTuesday (1/10/2024), in its lawsuit Epic accused Samsung of illegally conspiring to damage third-party application stores.
The lawsuit is because Samsung has an Auto Blocker feature which is now embedded in all new Samsung smartphones.
When this feature is activated, users automatically cannot install applications, unless the application comes from an official source. The official sources in question are the Google Play application store and the Samsung Store.
Epic also claims that there is no process for any other application store (outside of the Samsung Store and Play Store) to obtain authorization.
Please note, when Epic filed its first lawsuit against Google and Apple in August 2020, Epic did not yet have its own mobile app store.
Furthermore, on August 16, Epic launched the Epic Games Store on Android globally and for iPhone in the European Union, namely places where the European Union Digital Markets Act forces Apple to allow alternative stores.
A month before it could launch its own store, Epic accused Samsung of making Auto Blocker on-by-default, making it harder for new smartphone buyers to install its standalone apps.
