Argentine President Javier Milei has visited Pope Francis in Rome. Milei had brought traditional Argentinian cookies for his compatriot to apologize for previous insults. During the election campaign, Milei had called the head of the Catholic Church an “imbecile”.
Since his appointment as president, Milei has taken a completely different tone. Before his visit to the Vatican, he called Pope Francis “the most important Argentinian in history.”
Milei is trying to get more support from his fellow countrymen as his country is in a major economic crisis. For example, inflation is higher than 200 percent. A good relationship with the Pope, who is very popular in his home country Argentina, can help.
The president had brought so-called Alfajores de dulce de leche. These are traditional Argentinian cookies with caramel paste and coconut. Milei also gave him a roll of lemon cookies, because Pope Francis is a big fan of them.
The Pope couldn't resist giving a small sneer at his meeting with Milei. “You went to the hairdresser!” the Pope said, smiling, as they hugged. The president is known for his wild hair and sideburns.
According to the Vatican, the Pope and Milei spoke for an hour on Monday. Pope Francis said, among other things, that he wants to visit Argentina for the first time since he took office. Milei had a brief meeting with the Pope in the Vatican on Sunday during a church mass in which the first Argentine woman was canonized.
