A beer brewery will soon open for the first time in the United Arab Emirates. New regulations in Abu Dhabi allow alcohol production. This opens the country’s doors to beer breweries and distilleries.
The beer brewery will open at the end of this month. It concerns a pub called Craft by Side Hustle, the American news agency Bloomberg said.
It is the first brewery to open under a little-noticed change in law in Abu Dhabi. As a result, it is now possible for license holders to produce alcoholic beverages in the emirate.
Locals generally do not drink alcohol, but places like Abu Dhabi and Dubai are popular among expats and as holiday destinations. To make the region more attractive to people from outside, more and more strict rules are being adjusted. The United Arab Emirates has also recently scrapped other strict laws, such as restrictions around IVF treatments and gambling.
The Emirates set most alcohol laws separately. Until recently, alcohol could only be served in the relatively liberal emirate of Dubai, usually at bars and restaurants that are part of a hotel. It is now allowed to sell alcohol in shops everywhere in Dubai and there are more restaurants and cafes selling it.
Until now, no emirate has allowed the production of alcoholic beverages. In a region where several countries completely ban alcohol, this is a striking development.
