Jurgen Ekkelenkamp helped Royal Antwerp to its third victory in a row on Saturday. The midfielder scored a goal and an assist in the Jupiler Pro League when visiting Cercle Brugge: 1-3.
Ekkelenkamp opened the score for Royal Antwerp in the twentieth minute. The former Ajax player scored his fourth competition goal of the season.
Early in the second half, Ekkelenkamp also prepared his team’s 0-2. He provided the assist for former SC Heerenveen striker Chidera Ejuke’s goal. Kévin Denkey returned the favor on behalf of Cercle twenty minutes before the end. Deep into injury time, seventeen-year-old George Ilenikhena decided the match with the 1-3.
Ekkelenkamp was replaced fifteen minutes before time by trainer Mark van Bommel. Vincent Janssen and Owen Wijndal also had a starting place at Antwerp.
The victory moves Antwerp to third place in the rankings. Union Saint-Gilloise has eight points more than the reigning national champions. The leader will visit Charleroi on Sunday.
Royal Antwerp won 5-2 against Charleroi in the Belgian cup tournament last Wednesday. Four days earlier, Van Bommel’s team was too strong for OH Leuven (1-0) in the competition.
