Brussels, Dec 7 (EFE).- The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, supported this Thursday the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, in his request that the UN Security Council act ” immediately” and a new ceasefire be decreed to avoid “a total collapse of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
“I ask EU members of the UN Security Council and like-minded partners to support the call of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres,” Borrell said on his official account on X (formerly Twitter).
The head of European diplomacy stated that the United Nations Security Council “must act immediately to avoid a total collapse of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.”
Borrell also called on Israel to “allow all UN agencies, including its Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Lynn Hastings, to provide urgent support to civilians in Gaza.”
It is the first time since his mandate began in 2017 that Guterres has invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, which states that the Secretary-General “may draw the attention of the Council to any matter that in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of peace and security in the world.”EFE
