Next year, people with a small wallet can also apply for compensation for the high energy bill. The Temporary Energy Emergency Fund is expected to open for the second time in January 2024.
Vulnerable households can reduce their energy bills through the Temporary Energy Emergency Fund. They must meet a number of conditions for this: in order to qualify for support, the amount of the energy bill will be taken into account in relation to the income in the coming year.
Next year, people will be eligible for assistance sooner than in 2023. People with a low income can apply for support if they spend 8 percent of their income on their energy bill. In 2023 this was still 20 percent.
For people with a low middle income, this limit is now 10 percent of the income, instead of 13 percent last year.
The fund is a collaboration between various energy companies and the government. In 2023, more than 50,000 households will have received support from the Emergency Fund. A contribution from the fund can amount to hundreds of euros. A total of 43.7 million euros was paid out this year.
