Vivianne Miedema was emotional on Tuesday after the Netherlands’ match against Belgium. The top scorer of the Dutch national team made an important appearance for the first time since her cruciate ligament injury. “Wonderful to feel like Vivianne Miedema again.”
When Miedema talked to the press about half an hour after the final whistle, the tears had dried up. Yet it was clear how much this competition had affected her personally.
She made her return to the Dutch national team at the end of October, but it was a kind of public substitution: Miedema came on in the 83rd minute against Scotland when the score was 4-0. When Miedema came in against Belgium in the 66th minute on Tuesday, the Dutch team was still fighting for group victory.
“To be very honest, I liked this a little better,” Miedema said after the match. “You are just concerned with the result, you want to help the team instead of being 4-0 up and having to finish the match. It is wonderful to be able to play for thirty minutes and still feel like Vivianne Miedema again. .”
“We have always aimed to play as big a role as possible against Belgium. I think I have done that. Now I have to continue building up. Today I really had moments when I thought: Viv, he is back. And that is very bad. fine.”

“I think it’s pretty quiet in the house.”
The battle between England and the Netherlands for group victory came very close for Miedema. Her partner Beth Mead plays for England. “I hope you are very disappointed when I see you next time,” Miedema joked as they said goodbye for the last two Nations League matches.
Miedema got her way. “I think that when I come home on Thursday, it will be quite quiet in the house. From the moment you know that you are in the group together, you know that someone will sit at home disappointed in the summer. Of course, it could also be the case. that we are both at home.”
Miedema was mainly proud of Mead, who has also just returned from a cruciate ligament injury. “I have already sent her a text saying that I am proud that she has scored for the first time. She has also started in the starting line-up. These are huge milestones for her.”
