The president of Ukraine, the owner of Tesla and the artist who re-recorded and released five of her albums. At first glance, Volodymyr Zelensky, Elon Musk and Taylor Swift have little in common, but all three have appeared on the cover of the American magazine Time Magazine in recent years.
Today it was announced that the magazine has named world star Taylor Swift this year’s ‘Person of the Year’. This title is awarded annually to a person, phenomenon or movement that had a major influence on the news and therefore the world in the past year.
In Taylor Swift’s case, that meant kicking off a sold-out world tour, a re-release of her best-selling album and the much-discussed relationship with NFL player Travis Kelce.
The shortlist for the title included nine candidates, including Barbie, Russian President Putin and British King Charles. Yet it was Swift who – with one of her pets around her neck – ultimately made the cover.
“Although her popularity has grown over the decades, 33-year-old Swift managed this year to trigger a kind of core reaction from art and commerce,” the magazine wrote about the choice of the pop artist.
Era, 1989 a NFL
In a 7,000-word interview, Time looks back with Swift on 2023. The magazine spoke to her about, among other things, the 66 concerts of the Eras Tour that Swift has given so far in North and South America. The series, in which Swift performs 44 songs from ten different albums, led to unprecedented scenes at concert halls.
For example, TikTok was flooded in the past six months with videos showing thousands of fans who were unable to get a ticket. They followed the three-hour concert while singing from an adjacent parking lot. In Seattle, Swifties’ enthusiasm even led to seismographs recording a mild earthquake.
Music experts are already expecting that the tour – which will come to Europe next year – will generate a billion dollars in profit and thus break a record (according to figures from Billboard, the record holder is currently Elton John with his long-standing farewell tour Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour).
The 26 European concerts that Swift announced in June were sold out almost immediately. “They (fans, ed.) really had to do their best to get tickets,” Swift told the magazine. “I wanted to give them a show that is longer than they could ever imagine. When I leave the stadium, I feel good.”
Dutch fans of Taylor Swift were eagerly awaiting the ticket sales for the concerts in the Johan Cruijff Arena in July (text continues below the video):

Time also looked back with Swift on the reissue of 1989, the album that launched her to the top of the music world in 2014. The 33-year-old Swift now counts musical greats such as Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks and Beatle Paul McCartney among her circle of acquaintances.
Swift re-recorded all the songs from 1989 and self-released the album last year, with the idea of singer Kelly Clarkson. It is the fourth album she has re-recorded and there are two more remakes of previous albums to be released.
Swift has lost the rights to her first six albums to ex-manager Scooter Braun. “A way to deal with it,” Swift reflects in the interview. “Resistance is my response to pain.”
Who also benefits from Swift’s enormous popularity is the NFL, the most popular sports league in America. Since it became known that she has a relationship with American football player Travis Kelce (Kansas City Chiefs), the NFL can count on significantly more sales of Kelce shirts.
Tickets for matches have also recently sold out. The fact that the attention is focused on her at Kansas City Chiefs games is a side issue, she tells Time. “If a relationship is public, it means I want to see what he likes to do. We are there for each other, other people see that and we are not interested in that.
On Time’s list – which goes back to 1927 – Swift is the first musician to receive the honorary title. She didn’t say much about it on Instagram:

Me: Can I bring my cat.
