The Groningen municipality of Stadskanaal offers night shelter to 200 asylum seekers due to the crowds in the nearby registration center in Ter Apel. They can spend the night in heated tents on Manegelaan, which will be set up on Tuesday.
The temporary shelter is expected to be ready for use on Thursday, the municipality reports. The tents will be there until the end of January. Following the situation in Ter Apel, COA asked municipalities to assist in providing shelter to asylum seekers.
The waiting rooms in Ter Apel have been used as shelter for asylum seekers for almost two months. The number of people who register there is higher than the number of places that Ter Apel has, so people are forced to sleep in the waiting rooms on chairs or on the floor for several nights. This weekend the Red Cross came to the rescue in Groningen.
The aid organization distributed mats, blankets, pillows and hygiene packages, among other things. Mobile showers will also be installed. A spokesperson for the Red Cross still calls the situation in Ter Apel ‘precarious’. Last year, Stadskanaal also received asylum seekers from June to December. Tents were set up at the same location for people who could not go to Ter Apel.
