Steven Berghuis is not concerned that there was a commotion after the red card he received on Thursday in the Europa League match against Olympique Marseille. The 31-year-old Ajax player shakes off all criticism.
Berghuis was sent off for a tackle on Joaquín Correa, who accused him of a lack of compassion in an Instagram message on Friday. In a number of TV programs it was said that Berghuis started his tackle out of frustration.
“Everyone is who he is. I don’t communicate via Instagram or look at it. I didn’t injure Correa on purpose. I wish him all the best. That’s football. He had a bit of bad luck. That’s part of it. Sorry,” said Berghuis on Sunday against ESPN after NEC-Ajax (1-2).
“I asked Gerónimo Rulli and Gáston Ávila (fellow countrymen of Correa, ed.) how he was before they went to see him. I didn’t see the need to send him another message.”

‘Don’t get rid of the image anymore’
Berghuis already knew that he would receive criticism after his red card. “You can draw it out. It is mainly people who do not know me, who have not worked with me, who do not know my personality and never speak to me. They come with the standard judgement,” said the Dutch international.
“That is the image of certain people on TV who have been doing that for years. I can’t get rid of that anymore. I have to live with it. They are always people with double agendas. I don’t have those. I am a fan, enjoy the game and I’m straight forward. That’s why I can live very well with myself.”
Berghuis had a share in Ajax’s victory over NEC with a nice assist. The Amsterdam team recorded the first away win of this Eredivisie season and climbed to eighth place.
