The Dutch national team will find out on Saturday in Hamburg who the three opponents are in the group stage of next year’s European Championship. An overview of the possible opponents of the Dutch team at the final tournament in Germany.
The Netherlands was placed in pot 3 during the draw. This means that the team of national coach Ronald Koeman will meet a country from pot 1, 2 and 4. Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Scotland and Croatia are also in pot 3 and are therefore avoided.
In any case, the Dutch team will encounter a top country in the group phase of the European Championship. Host country Germany, Portugal, France, Spain, Belgium or England are in pot 1. Based on the FIFA rankings, Denmark is the strongest country from pot 2. Italy is the toughest opponent from pot 4.
In addition to Italy, only Serbia and Switzerland are so far in pot 4. Three more countries will be added. In the play-offs in March, Poland, Wales, Finland, Estonia, Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Iceland, Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan and Luxembourg will compete for those three tickets.
The group stage of the European Championship consists of six groups of four countries each. The numbers one and two and the four best numbers three go to the eighth finals. At the World Cup in Qatar, only numbers one and two advanced to the last sixteen.
The draw for the European Championship starts on Saturday at 6 p.m. and can be followed on NU.nl via a live blog. The tournament starts on June 14 next year. The final is on July 14 in the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
