The votes cast in four polling stations in Tilburg must be counted again due to an “inexplicable counting difference”, the House of Representatives decided on Saturday. The recount will not lead to a different result, but it is special.
This concerns polling stations 9, 15, 21 and 31 in Tilburg. An “inexplicable counting difference” was observed in those offices. The votes must be counted again on Saturday or Sunday. The recount has no consequences for the farewell of the old MPs and the installation of the new House of Representatives next Tuesday and Wednesday.
The difference was noted during the second count, on the Thursday after the elections. The number of votes for the PVV and DENK differed from the count on election night. Many municipalities only counted votes at party level on election night. A day later, the preferential votes were also counted.
According to the Commission for the Verification of Credentials, there was a counting difference “of more than fifteen votes in the determination of the result”. This committee, consisting of four MPs, investigates on behalf of the House whether the elections were conducted lawfully.
The committee asked the House for a recount. According to the procedures, an investigation is necessary if the counting difference at a polling station is more than 2 percent. Only the House of Representatives can decide on this.
Parties do not expect a different distribution of seats
NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt said on Friday on X that the difference in votes will not change the outcome, but that it is important that such differences are investigated.
D66 also thinks that there is a very small chance that a recount will make a difference in the distribution of seats. That party was closest to an extra seat in the election results. For this, the Democrats needed about 160 extra votes.
It rarely happens that the House of Representatives requests a recount. This happened for the first time during the 2019 European elections. It was then discovered that more votes had been cast than there were voting cards. That recount did not lead to a different election result.
