Chairman Jan Smit does not appear at an extraordinary meeting of FC Volendam on Thursday evening. The singer and his three fellow board members will most likely be dismissed by the club’s supervisory board in a crisis meeting.
“The board was already given notice of resignation on Sunday. We have no choice but to accept it,” Smit reports on X. “A turkey doesn’t go to Christmas dinner either.”
Smit and the other board members were invited by the supervisory board to attend an extraordinary meeting to explain their views. “We regard Jan Smit as an icon of Volendam society,” said Supervisory Board chairman Jaap Veerman earlier this week.
“We would like to thank him and his fellow board members – whatever the decision – for the efforts they have made on behalf of FC Volendam.”
Smit has to leave due to financial situation
It has been restless in Volendam for days. The bomb exploded when Smit said on Monday that he and his fellow board members had to leave. The supervisory board gave the club’s financial situation as the reason. FC Volendam suffered a loss of 3 million euros last season on a budget of 10 million euros, causing the club to end up in the red.
Smit denied that FC Volendam was in a bad financial position and screened with the transfer proceeds from Micky van de Ven, which will only be visible in the new financial year. That amounts to about 3 million euros.
A few hours ago, FC Volendam announced that Smit had suspended business director Frans ten Berge. The club reported as the reason a “general dysfunction in its portfolios and no openness towards the club on matters that are essential for good governance”.

Smit also fears the consequences for Wim Jonk
In addition to chairman Smit, the board of FC Volendam consists of treasurer Corn Veerman, Hans Bond (technical affairs) and Gerben Matroos (commercial affairs). Smit fears that his departure will also have consequences for technical manager Wim Jonk, technical director Jasper van Leeuwen and training director Ruben Jongkind. They form Team Jonk, which works closely with the singer.
“We are waiting for the resignation of the architects behind our success who are responsible for promotion to the Eredivisie and enforcement for the first time in 35 years.”
FC Volendam coach Matthias Kohler supports Smit. “Jan is the founder of this project. He deserves our support,” the coach told journalists present after a training earlier this week.
