Since the war between Israel and Hamas flared up, the Netherlands has been taking extra measures to prevent a terrorist attack. The National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) is also extra alert to threats, a spokesperson told NU.nl. The threat level has not increased.
Germany’s domestic intelligence service (BfV) reported on Wednesday that the chance of a terrorist attack in Germany has “significantly increased” due to the war between Israel and Hamas. “The risk is greater than it has been in a long time,” said BfV chairman Thomas Haldenwang.
According to the NCTV spokesperson, this risk also exists in the Netherlands, but the war in Gaza is no reason to increase the threat level here. “We are extra alert and are also taking extra measures, but at this time we are not increasing the threat level.”
The NCTV cannot say anything about the nature of the additional measures for security reasons. The spokesperson does confirm that the additional measures were taken after the start of the war in Gaza on October 7.
Synagogues, Jewish cemeteries and other important Jewish locations were already under extra surveillance after the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas. Some Jewish schools received extra security.
The five threat levels in the Netherlands
Minimal: it is not likely that a terrorist attack will take place in the Netherlands Limited: there is a small chance of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands Significant: a terrorist attack in the Netherlands is conceivable Substantial: the chance of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands is real Critical: a terrorist attack in the Netherlands is imminent
Threat level still at ‘significant’
The threat level in the Netherlands has been ‘significant’ since December 2019. The NCTV threat level indicates the likelihood of a terrorist attack in or against the Netherlands. According to the NCTV, an attack in the Netherlands is “imaginable”.
At the end of May, the NCTV concluded that the terrorist threat was increasing in the Netherlands. “There are more and more signals that jihadist organizations are preparing to commit terrorist attacks in Europe. These groups explicitly mention the Netherlands as a target,” the NCTV wrote in the Terrorism Threat Assessment Netherlands, which is published three times a year.
