The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) deployed extra security at the registration center in Ter Apel on Wednesday because security there is under pressure. This is due to the large numbers of people who report there.
“If you have a place that is not designed for that, you will get tensions and you have to manage that in good order,” a spokesperson explains. This also increases the pressure on current staff. It was announced on Friday that COA had requested extra security and staff to guarantee safety in the registration center.
In Ter Apel, asylum seekers have been forced to sleep on beds, mattresses and chairs in the waiting area of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) for weeks. Because the waiting area is used by the IND during the day, it is “inevitable” according to COA that some people will have to wait outside during the day. “This is not pleasant in this weather,” the spokesperson said. “We are of course looking at the possibilities of allowing people to sit inside. But it is a puzzle every day.”
The spokesperson has no indications that asylum seekers will have to spend the evening and night outside.
