Atlético Madrid was helped by two own goals in the Champions League match against Feyenoord (1-3) on Tuesday evening, but scored a beautiful goal themselves. Goalscorer Mario Hermoso enjoyed it.
Hermoso put Atlético at 0-2 about ten minutes after the break with a beautiful volley, with the ball ending up in the far corner. In Spanish media, the goal is compared to Marco van Basten’s famous volley in the 1988 European Championship final.
“I didn’t know exactly where the goal was, so there was some luck involved,” the 28-year-old Hermoso said afterwards. “It was my intention to shoot on goal. The ball fell in fantastically.”
Atlético had taken the lead in the first half through an own goal by Lutsharel Geertruida. After Mats Wieffer’s 1-2, Feyenoord player Santiago Giménez also scored an own goal: 1-3. Thanks to the victory in Rotterdam, Atlético, together with Lazio, is certain of wintering in the Champions League. The Europa League remains for Feyenoord.

Simeone: ‘We handled it well’
Atlético coach Diego Simeone saw his team perform differently than eight weeks ago in the home match against Feyenoord, although the Madrilenians also won then. It made the 53-year-old Argentinian happy.
“We knew it would be difficult against a team that is very strong at home,” he said. “We handled it well and played very well at times. We have not had the luxury of only playing for the group win in the last round for years.”
Atlético will play Lazio at home in two weeks in the final round. A draw is enough for Madrid to secure a group win.
