The wife of Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov has been poisoned. This was reported by Ukrainian intelligence sources and confirmed to Reuters by spokesman Andriy Yusov of the military intelligence service GUR.
News of the poisoning has not yet been independently confirmed. Several international media reported it based on anonymous sources after reporting by Ukrainian media. BBC News writes that she was poisoned with heavy metals.
A news site in the Eastern European country wrote on Tuesday that Marianna Budanova is being treated in a hospital. “Several” military intelligence employees may also have been poisoned. It is unknown how Budanova and the employees are doing.
A toxic substance may have been administered through the woman’s food. Budanova works as an advisor to the mayor of the capital Kyiv. Her husband Kyrylo Budanov is considered a well-known Ukrainian. He is seen as the mastermind behind several operations against the Russians.
Spy chief Budanov said in August that his wife has not left his side for security reasons since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. She is said to essentially live “in his office.”
