On March 30, 2022, two men were shot dead in a busy McDonald’s in Zwolle. The victims, brothers Ali and Hüseyin Torunlar, died on the spot. Suspect Veysel Ü. is expected to appear in court on Tuesday and Thursday. This is what the matter revolves around.
The Torunlar brothers had an appointment that Wednesday Ü. in the McDonald’s in Floresstraat. It was dinner time at that time, so the restaurant was well attended. A large number of children were also present.
The men are said to have been arguing about criminal money for some time. During the appointment it was discussed that Ü. had to pay 30,000 euros to the brothers. That money would be you. would not have had, after which he would have been threatened by Ali (57) and Hüseyin (62). The appointment lasted an hour, after which Ü. walked out of the fast food restaurant.
A little later he returned and shot the brothers dead: they were riddled with eleven bullets. “Extremely effective,” the prosecutor said earlier. “We can say that every shot was a hit.” The brothers died on the spot.
The shooting caused much panic in the restaurant. The staff were quickly brought to safety. Victim Support assisted a total of 85 people who suffered from, among other things, stress complaints. YOU. fled, but was arrested after a short manhunt. McDonald’s was closed for two weeks.

YOU. may also have received hundreds of thousands of euros from Ali’s son. He said he wanted to use that money to buy real estate through the Torunlar family. But he never saw any of that money again. Ali’s son denies that. “Ü. was the one who messed things up.”
YOU. was possibly extorted for months and threatened with death. According to the suspect’s lawyers, Michel van Stratum and Esther Blok, their client was under extreme pressure. “Death threats drove him to despair,” they said. Blok also states that Ü. was threatened again during the conversation in McDonald’s and that he shot “in a sudden fit of mind”.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) says it has evidence of threatening texts from Ali’s son to Ü., but no evidence that the Torunlar brothers threatened him during their meeting in McDonald’s. YOU. has now filed a report against Ali’s son because of the threats.
YOU. has confessed and expressed regret. “I’m terribly ashamed. Also for the children who were there.” You said earlier. in court no longer being able to remember everything. He repeatedly invoked his right to remain silent. He later confessed and expressed remorse.
It is not clear whether Ü. is fully accountable. The man did not want to cooperate in an investigation at the Pieter Baan Center.
The court will present the evidence to the suspect on Tuesday. Relatives of the victims and witnesses will also be given the opportunity to speak and demand compensation. The Public Prosecution Service will announce the sentence on Thursday. Because you. is suspected of a double murder, the Public Prosecution Service is expected to demand a life sentence.
