Europol has arrested several cybercriminals in Ukraine suspected of global ransomware attacks. The cyber attacks caused hundreds of millions of euros in damage worldwide.
On November 21, thirty buildings in Ukraine were raided, Europol reported on Tuesday. A 32-year-old suspect was arrested who, according to the investigation organization, was the mastermind behind the gang of cyber criminals. In addition, four accomplices were arrested.
According to Europol, the suspects were part of a network that allegedly carried out ransomware attacks on organizations in 71 countries. They mainly targeted large companies.
So-called ransomware makes files on infected computers inaccessible until a ransom is paid. In some cases, entire companies have been brought to a standstill.
During the operation, Europol seized computer equipment. That equipment has been forwarded to the Netherlands for analysis. Europol’s headquarters are in The Hague.
Police services from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Ukraine, the United States and Switzerland participated in the action. In addition, Eurojust and Europol’s European Cybercrime Center were involved in the investigation.
