According to the Public Prosecution Service, Gökmen T. is guilty of attempted murder of a prison guard. T. stabbed a custodian with a copper pipe. He is already serving a life sentence for the attack on a Utrecht tram in 2019.
T. had to appear in court on Tuesday due to various violent incidents in prison. The public prosecutor demanded ten years in prison in the extra-secure court in Rotterdam due to an “accumulation of violent incidents”.
In February 2021, T. stabbed a prison guard in the neck and face. The stabbing is seen as a murder attempt because time was spent making the weapon and therefore a lot of thought went into it. T. used a piece of copper that he had taken from a refrigerator pipe.
In addition to the stabbing, the public prosecutor also takes two other incidents into account in the case. In October 2021, T. allegedly threw a pan of hot oil at a prison employee, after he had also destroyed several devices in the recreation room. In July 2022, T. allegedly destroyed fitness equipment.
T. leaves court after statement about prison regime
T.’s lawyer believes that an additional prison sentence “serves no purpose whatsoever”. According to the public prosecutor, an additional sentence will influence a possible request for early release. T. could be eligible for this in the future.
When the officer made the demand, T. was no longer present in court. He left the court after expressing his frustration with the prison regime in a statement. The judge will rule in this case on December 12.
T. is serving a life sentence for the attack he committed in a Utrecht tram in March 2019. Four people were killed and six people were injured.
