Tension, uncertainty and despair took over the venue after the brutal kick that Argentine footballer Lucas Romero received in the face when he was trying to defend what could have been the visiting team’s tie. The former Independiente, who collapsed on the grass instantly, only regained consciousness in the medical center.
The shocking images could be seen during the official broadcast, when at 92 minutes Santos Laguna sought equality in the last play of the match. Juan Brunetta sent a cross into the area that went over the head of Perro Romero, who quickly turned and found himself in the presence of striker Harold Preciado.

Seeing that he was about to shoot, the Argentine tried to avoid the shot. It was at that moment when the Colombian accidentally kicked his rival in the jaw. Several teammates approached Romero and upon seeing him immediately called the medical staff, who acted quickly before putting him on the stretcher to take him off the field with his neck immobilized.
Fortunately, the accident did not become serious and the León coach, Nicolás Larcamón, confirmed it in the press conference after the victory: “Lucas (Romero) is stable, he is fine. I understand, from what the doctor told me, that we do not regret any bone injury. Yes, he had a strong blow, which caused him to lose consciousness for a short period of time.

“Now he is stable, he is fine, he feels good, it is clear with everything that has been happening today, and well, we hope that he can be well in these hours that are coming to us,” said the coach. Argentinian.
Hours later, it was the footballer himself who spoke out on the matter. “I lost consciousness, I just got checked out and I’m fine. I woke up when I was with the doctor, I don’t remember anything,” he acknowledged in a statement shared by journalist Ezequiel Gasca on his X account (formerly Twitter).
Regarding the footballer’s future, his coach stated that they will not be able to count on him for the next game: “We know that the period of the change due to concussion entails five days of not being able to compete. So we are clear that it will not be considered for the first leg. For the return leg, I understand that he will be able to play.”
In Mexico, however, they pointed out that according to Article 9 of the Liga MX concussion protocol (“Protocol for Return to Training and Matches of any Competition or friendly, national, international”), “the return to team training and matches of a player who has suffered a concussion will only occur after at least 7 (seven) days, and once the Player is free of concussion-related symptoms.”
If these periods are met, the Argentine, who arrived as León’s new reinforcement in December 2022, would be left out of the round-trip duels of the quarterfinals against América.
