A Comoros-flagged cargo ship sank off the Greek island of Lesbos on Sunday with 14 people on board, the Greek coast guard said.
According to the public channel Ert News, a first passenger was able to be picked up by the navy helicopter.
The ongoing rescue operation involves five boats, three coast guard vessels, two navy and air force helicopters and a navy frigate. Strong winds sweep through the area.
According to the Greek news agency ANA, the ship in distress was carrying cargoes of salt, departed from Egypt and had Istanbul as its final destination.
According to the coast guard cited by ANA, the cargo ship sank about 4.5 nautical miles (8.3 km) southwest of the island of Lesbos.
The crew includes two Syrians, four Indians and eight Egyptians, according to ANA.
