The KNSB also does not have the best selection for the third and fourth World Cup competitions of the season. This time, the skaters of Team IKO and Jumbo-Visma have canceled to the dissatisfaction of the association.
It is not the first time that the KNSB has had to deal with a collective cancellation. Two weeks ago, the skaters of AH-Zaanlander missed out on winning the first World Cup of the season. Irene Schouten’s team did not want to make the long trip to Japan.
Skaters from Team IKO, including Joy Beune and Sebas Diniz, will be missing in Norway next weekend. Jumbo-Visma has canceled the matches in Poland from 8 to 10 December. This includes Jutta Leerdam, Merijn Scheperkamp and Kai Verbij.
“Unfortunately, just like for the first World Cup in Japan, we are once again dealing with collective cancellations,” says discipline manager Freek van der Wart on behalf of the KNSB. “We have once again emphasized to the top teams and riders the increasing importance of the World Cups.”
At World Cups, starting tickets for European Championships and World Cups are at stake
At the World Cup competitions points can be earned for the World Cup ranking. This ranking will later determine how many Dutch people can participate in the European and World Championship distances and the World Championships all-round and sprint.
“We cannot force anyone to participate and there are always sports-related reasons to cancel,” says Van der Wart. “But we keep repeating: it is in everyone’s interest to earn as many starting tickets as possible at the World Cups for the European Championships, World Cups and later the Games.”
After the World Cups in Stavanger and Poland, the association will examine whether the maximum number of starting tickets for the European Championship is feasible. “We are on schedule for that,” says Van der Wart.
“But it is already clear that we must be fully represented at the fifth World Cup to obtain the last starting tickets for the World Cup and to achieve a good starting position for next season.”
