Spanish police have arrested three people in the investigation into the attempted murder of politician Alejo-Vidal Quadras. The former leader and co-founder of the populist right-wing party Vox was shot in the face in Madrid on November 9.
According to El Mundo newspaper, the suspects are two men and a woman. They were reportedly arrested in Malaga and Grenada. They may have supplied the firearm used to commit the attack, as well as the motorcycle on which the shooter fled.
Shooter with helmet
The 78-year-old politician was shot almost two weeks ago on the sidewalk in the Salamanca district of central Madrid. Witnesses say the gunman was wearing a helmet and rode away on a black Yamaha motorcycle.
Vidal-Quadras survived the attack and was conscious when he was taken to hospital. It is reported that he is still there and is being guarded.
Spain correspondent Miral de Bruijne:
Vidal-Quadras was shot on the day it became clear that Sanchez was going to sign an amnesty deal with the Catalan separatists. A sensitive day in Spanish politics. The former politician was against such a deal and posted about it to X less than an hour before the attack.
But when he arrived at the hospital, he reportedly told police that he had no opponents other than the Iranian regime. Vidal-Quadras was closely involved with the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). This is an umbrella organization of various Iranian resistance groups, whose aim is the fall of the Iranian regime. Due to his involvement with the NCRI, Vidal-Quadras has been on the Iranian regime’s blacklist since this summer.
The Spanish police are therefore investigating the case as attempted murder with a possible terrorist motive. But it has not been announced whether the three arrested suspects really have anything to do with the Iranian regime.
