The Dutch national team is definitively in pot 3 in the draw for the European Football Championship on December 2 in Hamburg. The Dutch team has therefore already partially mapped out which countries it can and cannot meet in the group phase in Germany.
Pot division EC draw
Pot 1: Germany, Portugal, France, England, Spain, Belgium Pot 2: Denmark, Turkey, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Austria Pot 3: Scotland, The NetherlandsCzech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia Pot 4: Serbia, Switzerland, Italy, three play-off winners
The other countries in pot 3 are Scotland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia. The Dutch team therefore avoids these countries in the group stage. It is also certain that the Dutch team will meet at least one top country, as there are no weak countries in pot 1.
One of the toughest scenarios is that the Netherlands ends up in a group with France, Denmark and defending champion Italy. But a ‘weak’ group with Belgium, Albania and a play-off winner is also possible. The play-offs for the last three European Championship tickets will be completed at the end of March. Only then will the field of participants for the European Championship be complete.
The group stage of the European Championship consists of six groups of four countries each. The numbers one and two and the four best numbers three advance to the eighth finals. At the World Cup in Qatar, only numbers one and two advanced to the last sixteen.
The European Championship draw starts on Saturday, December 2 at 6 p.m. in Hamburg.
