After 34 years, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) will be directed by a social scientist.

The Governing Board of the Maximum House of Studies appointed Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, who has a degree from the Faculty of Economics, as well as a master and doctor in History from the same, as the new rector for the period 2023-2027. university.
And his last three predecessors came from the Faculty of Medicine: Enrique Graue (2015-2023), José Narro (2007-2015) and Juan Ramón de la Fuente (1999-2007). However, before Francisco Barnés (1997-1999) was from the Faculty of Chemistry, and José Sarukhán (1989 to 1997) studied Biology at the Faculty of Sciences.

The news was celebrated on networks by the country’s red sphere. One of the first to speak out was the presidential candidate for the Frente Amplio por México (FAM), Xóchitl Gálvez, who said she was happy that a profile was chosen that would maintain autonomy and academic freedom at UNAM:

“Many congratulations to my beloved house of studies and its Governing Board for the selection process of its new rector. I am glad that they have chosen a profile that knows the importance of university autonomy and academic freedom.”
“For Mexico and for the University, I wish Leonardo Lomelí ¡Goya much success!” added the businesswoman through 𝕏.

Xóchitl was joined by the national leaders of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), Alejandro Moreno and Jesús Zambrano, respectively:
“Let it be for the good of this great Institution and the entire university community!” wrote the PRI member on the same platform.

“I know him professionally, I am confident that he will perform magnificently in this very high responsibility and I wish him the best of success for the good of the UNAM, the university community and the country,” the PRD member published for his part.
Another who spoke out on the matter was Alejandro Encinas, who until a few days ago served as Undersecretary of Human Rights of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) and is currently part of Claudia Sheinbaum’s campaign team:
“I congratulate my colleague on his appointment as Rector of UNAM, wishing that our highest house of studies strengthens its humanistic nature committed to social justice.”
Gerardo Esquivel, economist and former deputy governor of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), claimed to know the new rector well since they were students at the Faculty:

“I have known Leonardo since our university days at the Faculty of Economics. He is a serious and sensible person who knows and loves our institution deeply. Congratulations!”
The former advisor of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Ciro Murayama, described Lomelí Vanegas as a professional committed to the university:
“An economist and historian will be rector of the @UNAM_MX A serious academic, a serene man committed to university autonomy and social issues. Goya, University!”
Likewise, Blanca Lilia Ibarra, president commissioner of the National Institute of Access to Information (INAI), supported the professor’s career and called for them to work together to strengthen their institutions:

“A prominent economist with extensive experience at @UNAM_MX, to whom I reiterate my openness to continue strengthening inter-institutional ties that strengthen our functions,” he wrote.
It will be next November 17 when Lomelí Vanegas takes office as the new rector of the university.
