The book The Camino by author Anya Niewierra has won the NS Audience Award 2023. This was announced on Wednesday evening in the EenVandaag broadcast. The book was chosen from the top 6 best-selling books by the public with 34 percent of the votes.
“A wonderful achievement by Anya Niewierra for which we sincerely congratulate her. A major achievement, especially when you consider that in addition to her writing, she also has a full-time job. The story of De Camino about the war in the former Yugoslavia is terribly topical” , said Eveline Aendekerk, director of CPNB.
It was the first time that Niewierra had been nominated for the literature prize. “I am honored and moved, but above all extremely grateful. Every prize is special, but winning an audience award is extra special. I am lucky with my readers, because thanks to them, The Camino has become the success it is today,” says the author in a first response.
The five other nominees were: We were, I am (Israël van Dorsten), Alter ego (Esther Verhoef), The Royal House (Herman Koch), Koraalrif (Suzanne Vermeer) and What silence wants (Arthur Japin).
The NS Audience Award has been awarded since 1987 and consists of a sculpture by Jeroen Henneman, a cash prize of 7,500 euros and promotion of the book on the screens in NS trains in the week after the award ceremony.
Due to “large-scale manipulation of the votes”, the literature prize was not awarded last year. The prize returned this year, with an adjusted voting procedure. For example, email verification has been added. But the most visible change is that after more than 25 years, free choice has been abolished. This means that you can only vote for the top 6 best-selling books.
