Xavi Simons was unable to save RB Leipzig from elimination in the DFB-Pokal. The defending champions lost 1-0 in the second round at Wolfsburg. Former FC Twente player Václav Cerný scored the only goal.
Cerný, who switched from FC Twente to Wolfsburg last summer, found the net after just 14 minutes. The Czech received a perfect through ball from Tiago Tomas and then shot the ball flawlessly into the roof of the goal. It was his first goal for Wolfsburg.
Leipzig tried to force an equalizer, but that mission became even more difficult when Poulsen received his second yellow card in the 56th minute and had to be sent off the field. Deep into injury time it almost became equal, but Jonas Wind’s shot exploded onto the post.
This means that the defending champions have been eliminated from the German cup tournament. Leipzig won the DFB-Pokal for the second time in a row in June. The final in 2022 was won on penalties against SC Freiburg. In 2023, the team was too strong for Eintracht Frankfurt (2-0).
Leipzig is fifth in the competition. Marco Rose’s team has twenty points from nine games, five fewer than leader Bayer Leverkusen. Leipzig is in an excellent position in the Champions League. The team is second behind Manchester City with six points from three games.
