Xavi Simons was unable to save RB Leipzig from elimination in the DFB-Pokal. The defending champions lost 1-0 to VfL Wolfsburg in the second round. Former FC Twente player Václav Cerný scored the only goal. In the Italian Cup, Sydney van Hooijdonk scored his first goal for Bologna.
Cerný, who switched from FC Twente to Wolfsburg last summer, found the net after fourteen minutes. The Czech received a perfect through ball from Tiago Tomas and then shot the ball flawlessly into the roof of the goal. It was his first goal for Wolfsburg.
Leipzig tried to force an equalizer, but that mission became even more difficult when Yussuf Poulsen received his second yellow card in the 56th minute and had to be sent off the field. Deep into injury time it almost became equal, but Jonas Wind’s shot exploded onto the post.
This means the cup holder is disabled. Leipzig won the DFB-Pokal for the second time in a row in June. The final in 2022 was won via penalties against SC Freiburg. This year the team was too strong for Eintracht Frankfurt (2-0).
Leipzig is fifth in the competition. Marco Rose’s team has twenty points from nine games, five fewer than leader Bayer Leverkusen. Leipzig is in an excellent position in the Champions League. The team is second behind Manchester City, with six points from three games.

Van Hooijdonk helps Bologna win with the first goal
In the Coppa Italia on Tuesday evening, former SC Heerenveen player Van Hooijdonk played a heroic role. The striker scored his first goal for Bologna, beating Hellas Verona 2-0. Nikola Moro immediately gave Bologna a 1-0 lead.
After four substitute appearances, Van Hooijdonk started for the first time against Hellas. He played for ninety minutes and was important for coach Thiago Motta’s team with a goal. The Dutch team played 90 minutes tonight and showed themselves to coach Thiago Motta with a goal. Jong Oranje player Joshua Zirkzee was on the bench.
In the eighth finals of the cup, Bologna visits Inter, where Dutch internationals Denzel Dumfries, Stefan de Vrij and Davy Klaassen play. That match is scheduled for December 20.
