FIFA suspended former Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales for three years on Monday over the controversial kiss he gave during the Women’s World Cup awards ceremony. The 46-year-old Spaniard is not allowed to perform football-related activities during that time.
Rubiales kissed Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso after Spain won the World Cup final against England. The incident caused an uproar in Spanish football and beyond.
After the kissing incident, Rubiales refused to resign from the Spanish association, but in September he decided to resign from his position. Rubiales was almost unable to continue his work as federation president because FIFA suspended him for 90 days pending an investigation.
The criminal investigation against Rubiales is still ongoing. This followed after 33-year-old Hermoso reported assault. The top player said in her statement that she was barely able to enjoy the world title due to the riot. Hermoso teammates previously made a statement to the judiciary.
