OGC Nice defender Youcef Atal was suspended for seven matches on Wednesday by the disciplinary committee of the LFP, the organization behind the French competition. The reason was an anti-Semitic message on Instagram regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
27-year-old Atal deleted his post shortly after publication and apologized. “I would never support a message of hate,” the Algeria international said.
Atal was suspended by Nice, while the public prosecutor is still conducting a preliminary investigation. Atal is suspected of “glorifying terrorism”.
The right back is usually a basic player at Nice, which is second in Ligue 1. The defender has been playing at ‘Les Aiglons’ since the summer of 2018. He previously played for the Belgian KV Kortrijk and the Algerian Paradou.
There was also recently a commotion at FSV Mainz and Bayern Munich due to players’ Instagram posts. Former Ajax and PSV player Anwar El Ghazi was suspended at Mainz, while Noussair Mazraoui was summoned at Bayern. After an interview, Mazraoui was reinstated.
