The number of companies going bankrupt has been increasing for almost a year and a half. In September, 294 companies went under. This also includes well-known names such as BCC, Big Bazar and Vacansoleil.
The number of companies that went bankrupt was 65 percent higher than in September last year. Then 174 companies went bankrupt. This year, more companies went bankrupt only in June. Since May 2022, the number of companies going bankrupt has been greater every month than in the same period a year earlier.
In September, several well-known companies also went bankrupt. This applied to electronics store BCC, bargain chain BigBazar and also travel organization Vacansoleil. All three are now examining whether a restart under a new owner is possible.
The largest number of bankruptcies occurred in business services: fifty. Relatively many companies also went bankrupt in the transport sector and the catering industry. In trade and construction, the number of bankruptcies actually decreased.
SMEs are struggling with corona debts
Companies are struggling with high inflation and rising energy costs. The economy is also cooling down, making consumers more frugal with their spending. Finally, many entrepreneurs in small and medium-sized businesses are struggling with corona debts.
During corona times, entrepreneurs received a temporary deferment of payment from the Tax Authorities. Since October 2022, they really have to start paying back. A large group of companies is not successful in this. This autumn, the Tax Authorities – after sending a number of letters – started reclaiming money.
